IEEE BigData 2022 Report: Giuseppe Raffa

 Considering the growing importance of the topic of big data, it comes with no surprise that the IEEE conference dedicated to it is now a well-known and well-attended event, which attracts academics as well as industry practitioners. Last December, I was lucky enough to attend IEEE BigData 2022 in Osaka, Japan, where I presented the paper “Evaluating Anti-Virus Effectiveness in Linux” – joint work with Daniele Sgandurra and Daniel O'Keeffe – at the The 6th International Workshop on Big Data Analytic for Cyber Crime Investigation and Prevention.

It is not hard to imagine that the preparation of the trip has taken a bit of time. While initially it appeared to be a daunting task – probably the psychological effect of the pandemic – I managed to complete all the necessary bureaucratic steps fairly quickly. I was, in particular, relieved to know that Japan had relaxed the COVID-related entry requirements in mid-October, and also reinstated VISA-free travel for numerous countries.

Even though I am not exactly shy when it comes to speaking in public, I must confess that I was a bit tense on the day of the workshop, as I had never given a talk at a conference. Besides, the workshop took place on the very first day of the conference, which implies that, having reached Osaka only twelve hours earlier, I was still recovering from the jet lag. Despite all this, I am pleased to report that the presentation went reasonably well. I also had a couple of questions from the audience, which gave me the opportunity to further explain some of the key takeaways of our work.

I then spent the next three days attending interesting talks. The conference had sessions dedicated to papers with a focus on privacy and security, which – for obvious reasons – attracted my interest. It is also worth saying that IEEE BigData includes several workshops, and some of them, such as CyberHunt 2022, which I attended, are indeed cyber security-related. So, if data analysis, machine learning and artificial intelligence play an important part in your research, I would definitely encourage you to consider in the future IEEE BigData and its workshops as possible publication venues.

Remote working and Cyber Security: Georgia Crossland and Amy Ertan

Introducing the project The shift to remote working represents a huge shift for employees and organisations alike, introducing significant implications for cyber security. New Publication: Remote Working and (In)Security?: Amy Ertan

A recent research report by CDT researchers Amy Ertan and Georgia Crossland has been published with the Research Institute for Sociotechnical Cyber Security (RISCS). The report examines ‘The Impact of Pandemic-Driven Remote Working on Employee Wellbeing, the Psychological Contract and Cyber Security’, with research carried out through a series of interviews with senior cyber security colleagues between January and April 2021.
